You’ll need to know the amp/hour rating of the battery and factor in the current (amp) load demand of the devices being used. I don’t think you’ll be able to operate a stove for long (if at all) though a DVD player and low wattage light shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

If the electricity where you live is sporadic then you might think about a camp stove that runs on gas or kerosene. My buddy is trying to live off the grid and has a ton of 12 volt marine batteries and it seems to work OK.

If I can, what uses does this energy can have at home?

Back in the day……. before the ’80′s even….. a mag called "Mother Earth News" that gave all sorts of instructions on solar power and how to build/maintain your set up– They do have a web site– The motherearthnews.com and even a google of the mag will get some information. They built one solar waterheater I remember out of black plastic, alumium cans, wood and glass– quite achievable for the average folk.
Be sure and check out your power company– here in Oklahoma the power company has to buy your excess electricity– I’m sure there are all sorts of rules– but check it out.

I saw an old Nova show, and in the Nineties they were developing photovoltaic that converted all of the wave lengths into electricity. (at the time only the Red wavelengths were generating electricity.) Were those ever made? Solar is not viable unless a panel can turn more than 50 percent of the light into electricity, where can I buy those? Thank you in advance, and God Bless You

Solar energy is very viable now, even though the efficiency of the panels on the market now is in the 10-15% range. Much work is being done to develop cells with multiple layers, each capturing photons at a different band gap. Work in the lab is achieving efficiencies up to 40%; others are achieving customary efficiencies at much lower cost, or with more flexible form factors.

I have a 2 bedroom one bath smaller ranch home with a basement.. I am looking to use solar instead of electricity.

many factors.. you need to determine your electrical load first, then what your location options are that will receive the most sun… it also depends where you are located.

for example… a 18.5kv system in california would run about 70-100k… then you also need to consider batteries for back up for the no sun days, as well as for the night time…

it’s not cheap to be fully off the grid

some areas offer very nice rebates when you go to solar… call a local solar installer, they’ll be happy to talk to you.

I live in india. My house has 5 ceiling fans, 1 TV, 1 refrigerator, 1 washing machine, 1 electric motor for pumping water, 1 electric iron, 1 electric heater for heating water, 8 tube lights, 6 bulbs. Also tell me how much will it cost me to have these solar panels installed in indian rupees. Also tell me where to get these panels in india. Thanks

I live in Florida. I’m trying to figure out how to break into solar power without spending a lot of money and actually get some good ROI. Any average homeowners out there using solar power? How/what did you do? Thanks!

My neighbor did this here in NY and he spent about $25K to go to solar. He sells back extra power he uses to the electric company. He also got a rebate from the electric company to pay for half of it. So you may have to put out a lot of money but I think he got about 25% refunded to him immediately and then he get some money every month for selling the electricity to the power company.

A super way to go right now because oil will go so high that electric bill will quadriple within 2 years time and so you will be very glad with any solar projects you took on. The sooner the better cause one year from now half the country will want to invest in this!
